August 8, 2012: PLACES to Open Its Fourth Housing First Facility

PLACES will open its fourth Housing First facility for 12 men and women in 2013 thanks to a grant recently awarded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

PLACES already serves 26 men and women at its three other Housing First facilities located throughout Montgomery County.

The Housing First Program provides permanent housing and on-site supportive services for adults diagnosed with mental health disorders who are homeless. The program goal: to provide a safe, stable residence that allows tenants – many with substance abuse problems, criminal records and no income – to plan for their futures and reintegrate into the community.

“Our Housing First model has been very successful in helping long-term homeless men and women with multiple mental health problems establish long-term tenancy,” said Roy Craig, executive director of PLACES.

Miami Valley Housing Opportunities, which partnered with PLACES on the previous Housing First facilities, will purchase and renovate a property this fall and then lease it to PLACES for operating the fourth program.

Like the other three Housing First facilities, the fourth will be staffed 24/7 by trained, professional PLACES staff who can help tenants acquire skills to maintain their housing and secure an income, Craig said.
