History of PLACES, Inc.

PLACES was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1988. PLACES is governed by a 7 to 10 member Board of Trustees. The Board meets bi-monthly to oversee the corporation’s fiscal operations and to make and monitor its operational policies. The daily administration is conducted by the Executive Director and his staff.

PLACES began with one adult care facility and a staff of 8. Currently PLACES, Inc. employs approximately 63 staff members in seven locations in Montgomery County. This staff services PLACES’ three business lines: the Residential program, the Supportive Living program, and the Housing First program.

PLACES’ opened its Residential program with three units at Lexington Lodge. In 1991, PLACES’ opened its first Adult Care Facility (ACF) on North Main Street in Dayton. Currently, PLACES operates four ACFs licensed by the Ohio Department of Health and staffed seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. The Residential Program is funded through the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Montgomery County (ADAMHS), the Ohio Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and client fees.

PLACES began the Supportive Living Program as its second business line in 1995, offering services to promote success within independent living arrangements. The program grew rapidly, and in 1997 it expanded its services by obtaining funding for services to the hard-to-serve homeless. The resulting “Opening Doors for the Homeless” program is an innovative collaboration that partners PLACES with six providers of behavioral health and services for the homeless. The program focuses on that segment of Montgomery County’s homeless who have severe mental illnesses, drug and alcohol addiction or co-existing mental health and substance abuse problems. The SLP program is funded by the ADAMHS Board for Montgomery County and HUD.

During August 2004, PLACES opened its “Housing First” program in a ten unit apartment building in Moraine for mentally ill men and women who were homeless and who were not linked to the public mental health system. In February 2007 PLACES opened its second “Housing First” program in an eight unit apartment building in Harrison Township. Both “Housing First” programs are primarily funded by HUD but receive some support from the ADAMAHS Board for Montgomery County and Montgomery County HOME Funds.
